Disney+ is moving its original shows to Wednesdays after 'Loki' was its biggest debut yet
- Disney+ has moved the release dates for its upcoming original shows from Fridays to Wednesdays.
- "Loki," which debuted last Wednesday, was Disney+'s biggest premiere yet.
- Now Disney won't be competing with Netflix, which typically releases its shows on Fridays.
Disney+ is looking to stake a claim on Wednesdays.
The streamer has moved the release dates for its upcoming original series from Fridays to Wednesdays after the success of "Loki." The new Marvel Cinematic Universe series debuted last Wednesday (after originally being set for Friday) and was its biggest premiere yet, Disney CEO Bob Chapek said this week.
Disney did not release viewership numbers and did not respond to a request from Insider on how it counts a view.
The upcoming originals that will now debut weekly episodes on Wednesdays include the Pixar series "Monsters at Work" (July 7) and "Turner and Hooch" (July 21).
Previous Disney+ originals like "The Mandalorian" and "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" debuted on Fridays with success. Disney also said the latter was its most watched premiere before "Loki" dropped.
But future Marvel and "Star Wars" shows will also debut on Wednesdays, according to The Hollywood Reporter, and original movies will continue to debut on Fridays.
Now, Disney won't be competing with Netflix, which typically releases its shows on Fridays and drops all the episodes at once, as opposed to Disney's weekly release schedule.
The upcoming Disney+ shows impacted so far include:
- "Monsters at Work" (July 7)
- "Turner and Hooch" (July 21)
- "Behind the Attraction" (July 21)
- "Chip 'n' Dale: Park Life" (July 28)
- "Turning the Tables with Robin Roberts" (July 28)
- "The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse" (July 28)
- "Growing Up Animal" (August 18)
- "Short Circuit" (August 4)
