Javed Akhtar, one of Bollywood's most celebrated lyricists and screenwriters, made a significant decision in the late 1990s that altered the course of Indian cinema history the slightest bit. He famously turned down the opportunity to work on Karan Johar’s iconic film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), a movie that went on to become a cultural phenomenon.
In a recent chat on comedian Sapan Verma’s YouTube channel, Javed Akhtar revealed that when Karan Johar approached him to work on Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, he initially agreed. However, when Johar decided on the film’s now-famous title, Javed had second thoughts. “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai… kya hota hai?” he wondered aloud, sharing how he couldn’t quite wrap his head around the vague phrase. Javed refused to write lyrics for a film with a title he found meaningless.
At the time, Johar was a debutant director and Mr Akhtar, known for his profound and poetic sensibilities, probably felt that the title lacked the gravitas he typically looked for in a project.
Instead, the film’s songs were penned by Sameer Anjaan, who delivered chartbusters like "Tujhe Yaad Na Meri Aayi" and the iconic title track "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai." The soundtrack went on to become one of the most beloved of the decade, contributing greatly to the Shah Rukh, Rani and Kajol-starrer’s success.
And as Karan himself revealed during a discussion with designer Prabal Gurung on the Gold House YouTube channel, Javed Akhtar did call him after the movie’s success and admitted that he was wrong. Fortunately, all was not lost and Karan and Mr Akhtar joined forces on the 2003 film Kal Ho Naa Ho. Suffice to say, the music was a hit there as well.
But looking back, it’s fascinating to think how the lyrical landscape of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai might have been different had Akhtar taken up the project — even if we adore the existing songs!
