Cher is asking a court to put her in charge of her 47-year-old son's finances, fearing he and his estranged wife will blow the money on 'self-destructive' purposes
- On Wednesday Cher filed for conservatorship over her 47-year-old son Elijah Blue Allman.
- Allman, the petition claims, is "unable to manage his financial resources" due to drug addiction and mental health issues.
Singer Cher filed for conservatorship over her son Elijah Blue Allman on Wednesday, claiming her son's "severe" substance abuse issues have made him "substantially unable to manage his financial resources," including a trust from his late father Greg Allman.
In a petition filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday, Cher said that the 47-year-old is "currently unable to manage his assets due to severe mental health and substance abuse issues."
At issue is a trust set up by Allman's late father, musician Greg Allman, which contains $120,000, according to the petition seen by Business Insider.
Per the petition, Cher is "concerned that any funds distributed to Elijah will immediately be spent on drugs, leaving Elijah with no assets to provide for himself, and putting Elijah's life at risk."
According to the petition, Allman's crisis escalated after reconnecting with his estranged wife, Marieangela King.
"Until recently, Elijah and Angela were estranged and their tumultuous relationship has been marked by a cycle of drug addiction and mental health crises," the petition reads. "Petitioner is informed and believes that Angela is not supportive of Elijah's recovery and that Angela actively works to keep Elijah from getting clean and sober or receiving mental health treatment that he desperately needs."
According to the filing, King "took steps to check Elijah out of the treatment center where he was receiving much needed medical care." It goes on to say that King isn't qualified to be a conservator of Allman's estate because it "would result in the immediate loss or dissipation of Elijah's assets for self-destructive purposes."
King and Allman, through his attorney, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Cher, through her attorney, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
King and Allman married in 2013 but separated in 2020. In 2021, Allman filed for divorce from King. Then, in November 2022, King and Allman attempted to reconcile, spending twelve days together in New York.
According to an affidavit King wrote in December 2023, their time came to an end when four men came into their hotel room and took Allman to a drug treatment facility. King said that one of the men told her they had been hired by Allman's mother.
When this information came to light in October, Cher publicly responded to claims that she had kidnapped her son by telling People "that rumor is not true."
"I'm not suffering from any problem that millions of people in the United States aren't," she told the outlet. "I'm a mother. This is my job — one way or another, to try to help my children. You do anything for your children. Whenever you can help them, you just do it because that's what being a mother is. But it's joy, even with heartache — mostly, when you think of your children, you just smile and you love them, and you try to be there for them."
In a 2014 interview with Entertainment Tonight, Allman admitted that he'd been battling addiction since he was 11 years old.
"I [was] just looking to escape all the things in my past and, that's when you turn to those kind of drugs, you know heroin and opiates," he told the outlet.
Allman went on to say that using heroin had "saved" him from other types of self-harm.
"If I didn't have that at that point, I don't know what I would have done …You may jump off a bridge. If you can only just go through that time period and live through it and then get help."
At the time of the interview, Allman said he'd been sober since 2008.
Following the conservatorship filing, Allman posted an Instagram image of a mouth full of silver fangs with the caption: "'means business' #fangophilia #changeling #Roam f#imprisonmentviaconservatorship @imprisonmentviaconservatorship."
Several of his Instagram posts dating back to December 16 have similar hashtags.
A hearing on the conservatorship is set for January 5.
