Amy Schumer dropped out of the 'Barbie' movie because the original script didn't feel 'feminist and cool'

Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" movie is one of the most anticipated releases of the year partly because of its cast, which includes Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Simu Liu, Emma Mackey, and more.

The project has been in development for quite some time. The comedian Amy Schumer originally signed on for the titular role in 2016 when Sony Pictures was developing the movie. She also cowrote the script but left the project a few months later, citing scheduling conflicts.

But the star appeared on Thursday's episode of "Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen" and confirmed that she actually parted ways with the studio because of creative differences.

"I can't wait to see the movie, it looks awesome. I think we said it was scheduling conflicts, that's what we said. But yeah, it really was just creative differences," Schumer said. "But you know, there's a new team behind it, and it looks like it's very feminist and cool, so I will be seeing that movie."

When Cohen asked whether the original version of the movie wasn't "feminist and cool," Schumer said, "Yeah."

This isn't the first time Schumer has discussed the original plan for the "Barbie" movie.

The star told The Hollywood Reporter in 2022 that she and Sony Pictures had different ideas of what the movie should be.

"They definitely didn't want to do it the way I wanted to do it, the only way I was interested in doing it," Schumer said.

The outlet also reported that the original script would have seen Schumer exiled from Barbieland because she wasn't perfect enough.

Warner Bros. acquired the "Barbie" movie in 2018, and Margot Robbie quickly signed on to play the titular role in 2019. Greta Gerwig, the director of "Lady Bird" and "Little Women," joined the project in 2021.
