  • Prime Video is greenlighting Critical Role's "The Legend of Vox Machina" for another season.
  • This renewed investment is a vote of confidence in nerdworld ahead of the show's season three finale.

Amazon is betting big on nerdworld and investing in another season of Critical Role's "The Legend of Vox Machina."

The animated series — which broke Kickstarter records in 2019 with a $11.3 million funding run — is now in its third season and airing on Prime Video.

On Wednesday, the streamer announced it was greenlighting a fourth season of the show ahead of the season three finale — a massive vote of confidence in a nerdworld business' ability to keep bringing in the dollars.

For the uninitiated, "The Legend of Vox Machina" is based on a "Dungeons & Dragons" Twitch stream in which eight self-professed "nerdy voice actors" played the game live.

Now, Critical Role is a nerdworld business run by its eight cofounders. They're working on two animated series with Amazon, selling out arenas, and running an in-house game publishing arm.

Melissa Wolfe, head of animation at Amazon MGM Studios, said the company is excited "for more to come" from the Critical Role crew.

"Our global Prime Video audience has embraced this series from the beginning and the fans, along with us, remain passionate about the characters and stories," Wolfe said.

In the show's third season, the band of adventurers — voiced by the eight Critical Role cofounders — have been fighting and slaying dragons to save their world of Exandria. If the fourth season stays true to the original "Dungeons & Dragons" campaign it's based on, the crew will contend with darker, god-tier forces, with tragic consequences for the party.

"We are beyond thrilled — and grateful — to continue the epic and wild adventures of Vex, Vax, Keyleth, Percy, Pike, Grog, and everyone's favorite character — Scanlan," said Critical Role cofounder Sam Riegel, who's also an executive producer on the show.

"With each season, this show levels up, and we already have big plans to level up both our heroes and villains in Season Four," Riegel added.

"The Legend of Vox Machina'" season three will release its final episodes on Thursday, October 24, on Prime Video.
