All the DC Comics movies and TV shows in the works for HBO Max after 'Peacemaker'

"Peacemaker," HBO Max's first TV series based on a DC Comics movie, is a hit.
It was the biggest original streaming show in the world as of January 22, according to audience demand data from Parrot Analytics.
It's not the first DC project for WarnerMedia's Max — the service inherited shows like "Titans" and "Doom Patrol" from the former streaming service DC Universe (which is now a digital-comics-only service called DC Universe Infinite). And it certainly won't be the last. In a 2020 profile, the DC Films chief Walter Hamada told The New York Times, "With every movie that we're looking at now, we are thinking, 'What's the potential Max spinoff?'"
Here are a handful of titles that WarnerMedia confirmed are in development or have been ordered to the service:
- "Batgirl," a Max original movie
- "The Batman" spinoff about the Gotham City Police Department
- A Green Lantern series and "Strange Adventures" from Greg Berlanti
- A series inspired by Justice League Dark characters, produced by J.J. Abrams
And more have been reported to be in the works, like another spinoff of "The Batman" starring Colin Farrell's Penguin.
DC is set to be a major component of Max as the service continues to compete in the streaming space, which has been dominated by genre IP like Marvel and "Star Wars" at Disney+; "The Witcher" and "Stranger Things" at Netflix; and "The Wheel of Time" and "The Boys" at Amazon.
Below is every DC Comics movie and TV show in the works for Max:
A Green Lantern series — confirmed as ordered to series
Max has order a series inspired by the Green Lantern Corps, a group of space cops entrusted with rings powered by their will. Max announced in 2019 that it was in development from producer Greg Berlanti, known for DC shows on The CW like "The Flash" and "Legends of Tomorrow."
"Strange Adventures" — confirmed as in development
Greg Berlanti is also attached to a series called "Strange Adventures" that is still in the development phase. In 2019, Berlanti described it as "an anthology series of cautionary tales set in a world where superpowers exist."
Justice League Dark-inspired series — confirmed as in development
A series based on Justice League Dark characters is in development for Max. In April of 2020, Max announced that "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" director J.J. Abrams would produce through his production company Bad Robot's multiyear deal with WarnerMedia.
"The Batman" Gotham PD spinoff series — confirmed as ordered to series
Max announced in July of 2020 that it had made a series commitment to a spinoff of "The Batman" set within the Gotham City Police Department. "The Batman" director Matt Reeves is set to produce and "Boardwalk Empire" creator Terence Winter will write the series.
A Constantine series — reported by multiple outlets
Multiple outlets, including The Hollywood Reporter and Variety, reported last February that J.J. Abrams was developing a series about the DC Comics character Constantine for HBO Max, that would tie into the series based on Justice League Dark characters.
"Batgirl" movie — confirmed, expected to be released this year
"Batgirl," with "In the Heights" star Leslie Grace in the title role, is now in production. Last May, Warner Bros. tapped "Bad Boys for Life" directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah to direct the movie, which is expected to be released this year.
A Black Canary movie — confirmed as in early script development
"Harley Quinn" season three — confirmed
Another former DC Universe show, the adult-oriented animated "Harley Quinn" series will return for a third season, Max announced in September of 2020.
"Titans" season four — confirmed
Max announced in October that it had renewed "Titans" for a fourth season. The series, which features characters like Robin, Nightwing, and Superboy, moved from DC Universe to Max when the former transformed from a streaming service to a digital-comics service.
"Doom Patrol" season four — confirmed
Like "Titans," "Doom Patrol" was inherited by Max from DC Universe. Also like "Titans," it's been renewed for an upcoming fourth season.
"Pennyworth" season three — confirmed
Max also announced in October that the Epix series "Pennyworth," about the early years of Batman's butler Alfred, would move to the service for its third season. The first two seasons are also currently available on Max.
"The Batman" Penguin spinoff — reported by multiple outlets
Another "The Suicide Squad" spinoff — teased by James Gunn
James Gunn, the director of "The Suicide Squad" and creator of its Max spinoff series "Peacemaker," told Deadline in January that he is working on another spinoff of the movie. But he didn't give any further details.
"We're working on something else now, another TV show that's connected to that universe," Gunn said.
He also said "there's a really good chance" that "Peacemaker" would be renewed for season two.
