- Britney Spears and Jason Alexander were childhood friends.
- The pair got married in Las Vegas in January 2004, but the marriage was annulled two days later.
1990s: Britney Spears and Jason Alexander grow up in Kentwood, Louisiana.
Britney Spears grew up in Kentwood, Louisiana, where she took dancing and singing lessons. Spears was eventually cast in "The All New Mickey Mouse Club" and caught the eye of executives at Jive Records, which led to her becoming a chart-topping pop star.
While living in Kentwood, she made friends with Jason Alexander, who originally had aspirations of becoming a professional football player and was a fullback and linebacker while attending Southwest Mississippi Community College.
In 2004, head coach Don Green told MTV that Alexander had mentioned partying with Spears before.
"He said they knew each other as friends, but I never really believed it. I was blown away when I heard they'd gotten married," said Green.
January 3, 2004: Spears and Alexander get married for 55 hours.
Spears invited her childhood friend on a trip to Las Vegas over New Year's. After the pair went to several wild parties, they decided to get married on January 3.
Spears wore a black top, jeans, and a white baseball cap, while Alexander was wearing a casual shirt.
Alexander later spoke to Access Hollywood about the Vegas wedding. "It was just so crazy, man. We were just looking at each other and said, 'Let's do something wild, crazy. Let's go get married, just for the hell of it,'" he recalled.
The couple rented a bright green limo and got married at A Little White Wedding Chapel at 5 a.m.
Venue owner Charolette Richards later told Rolling Stone: "They weren't dressed in wedding attire, but it was very romantic and there was a feeling of love between them. They appeared to be extremely happy. They were laughing, but crying, too, during the ceremony. I thought it was a marriage that would last forever."
January 5, 2004: The marriage is annulled.
After 55 hours as a married couple, Spears and Alexander's marriage was annulled following a short hearing at Clark County Family Court in Nevada.
Per Today.com, the petition read: "Before entering into the marriage the plaintiff and defendant did not know each other's likes and dislikes, each other's desires to have or not have children, and each other's desires as to state of residency. Upon learning of each other's desires, they are so incompatible that there was a want of understanding of each other's actions in entering into this marriage."
The singer's attorney, David Chesnoff, said at the time: "There is no marriage now. Jason agreed to this completely. They've made a wise decision. I know they care about each other. They are friends."
March 2004: Britney says she was just being rebellious.
When asked about the wedding in an E! special, Spears said that she was trying to have fun, and she got swept up in the party atmosphere.
"It was me being silly, being rebellious, and not really taking the responsibility of what I was doing, you know? And after partying, you know, you really don't think about what you're doing. So it was one of those things that were really silly," said Spears.
The star added: "I think I was running away from something, I didn't quite know what. I'm still figuring out myself and learning every day. But I think I'm more in a good place. I like being alone, which is good I think. You know, I love reading books. I'm really a quiet kind of person right now. And so it's cool to be back and feel like yourself again."
February 2012: Jason says he thought they were in love.
Speaking to ABC News in 2012 about marrying Spears, Alexander said that he thought she loved him.
"She just came out and asked me. She was like, 'Well, let's get married.' And I was like, 'Sure. You know, let's do this,'" said Alexander.
"I went with my feelings. I was in love with her. I feel like she felt the same way," he added.
Alexander said that "everyone went crazy because there was no prenup," which resulted in the annulment.
"That was probably the hardest part about it. I had obviously got my feelings involved. I didn't get paid. I didn't make any money directly from that," he said.
August 2020: Jason appears at a #FreeBritney protest in Los Angeles.
During the campaign to remove Spears from under her conservatorship, Alexander appeared at a #FreeBritney protest in Los Angeles to show his support for the movement.
Alexander told Us Weekly: "I'm here to show support for the #FreeBritney movement and Britney. This is an unfortunate situation that's been in her life for a long time. It's affected me and her, and that makes me part of it."
He added: I've been quiet for 10 years, and I feel what a good time to come forward now with the movement making noise and the conservatorship hearings going on."
July 2021: Alexander says that Spears' team told him he and the singer could still date if he agreed to the annulment.
Appearing on the podcast "Toxic: The Britney Spears Story," Alexander said that Spears' team told him that the pair could possibly be together in the future if he agreed to annul the marriage.
He said: "They told me if I would sign the contracts, the annulment, they would let me and Britney continue our relationship, and if we felt the same way in six months they would give us a proper marriage."
"So I had no reason to believe otherwise. I thought that's what the truth was. They were allowing Britney and I to still have phone communication. So we were talking every day and I still believed the story I was told, that they were going to let us continue to talk and then we would have this marriage in the future if we felt the same way," he added.
June 2022: Alexander crashes Spears' wedding to Sam Asghari.
18 years after her brief marriage to Alexander, Spears tied the knot with model and actor Sam Asghari in June 2022.
Alexander tried to crash the pair's wedding by scaling the fence to Spears' home in Thousand Oaks, California, before the ceremony.
Alexander livestreamed his attempt to see Spears on Instagram, according to E! News.
Per E!, Alexander was quoted as saying: "I'm her first husband. I'm here to crash the wedding because nobody is here except Sam. Where the fuck is the family?"
He was arrested and later found guilty of aggravated trespassing and battery in August 2022.
October 2023: Spears says she married Alexander because she was "very drunk" and "bored."
Spears recalls her trip to Vegas with Alexander, and how the ceremony happened in her new memoir, "The Woman in Me."
"People have asked me if I loved him. To be clear: he and I were not in love," Spears writes. "I was just honestly very drunk — and probably, in a more general sense at that time in my life, very bored."
Spears also says that marrying Alexander was meant to be a fun joke, rather than a serious situation. But her family didn't see it that way.
"They made way too big a deal out of innocent fun. Everybody has a different perspective on it, but I didn't take it that seriously," she writes. "I thought a goof-around Vegas wedding was something people might do as a joke. Then my family came and acted like I'd started World War III. I cried the whole rest of the time I was in Las Vegas."
