It's been five years since the last "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie, and it seems like fans will have to keep waiting.

Actress Margot Robbie told Vanity Fair in a story published on Monday that a spin-off movie she was set to star in at Disney has been scrapped.

"We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led — not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story — which we thought would've been really cool, but I guess they don't want to do it," Robbie said.

Representatives for Disney's film studio did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The project had been gestating for a while. The Hollywood Reporter first reported in 2020 that the movie was in development, and would have told a separate story from the Jack Sparrow-centric films, with new characters.

Christina Hodson, who also wrote Robbie's "Birds of Prey," was set to write the "Pirates" spin-off movie.

The first five "Pirates" movies, starring Johnny Depp as Sparrow, grossed a combined $4.5 billion worldwide. While they dwindled in critical praise after the first movie, the third and fourth installments still earned over $1 billion globally.

THR reported in 2019 that a sixth "Pirates" movie, described as "reboot," was in development, which Robbie's movie would have been separate from. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer told The Sunday Times in May that that movie was still in development — though he said the same of Robbie's film.
