What's the best outfit to wear for a flight?
If you ask musician Sam Smith, they might suggest trying highly-distressed jeans that reveal the back of your legs.
The musician was recently spotted in a New York City airport by fan Paisly Farnum, who posted two photos of the five-time Grammy winner to TikTok on Saturday.
In Farnum's post, which has been viewed 3.5 million times, Smith is shown wearing a blue button-up shirt and Balenciaga's $2,450 "super destroyed baggy pants" from the brand's summer 2023 collection.
Viewers were quick to question Smith's look, with many saying they'd never wear denim that distressed on a plane.
"I would not want my body to be touching the airplane seats ," one TikToker wrote.
"Wearing those jeans on a plane is wild ," another person commented.
But Smith is no stranger to daring fashion or barely-there jeans.
For example, in January 2023, the musician modeled sliced denim that showed lots of skin for Ludovic de Saint Sernin.
What's considered proper plane attire has long been debated, with flight crews and travelers often disagreeing on what's appropriate to wear in the air.
An athlete said she was told her athleisure outfit, which included joggers and a sports bra, was "too revealing" by a Southwest flight attendant in September 2023. Another woman said she was escorted from a Delta flight in February of this year because she wasn't wearing a bra.
@Delta I was extracted from a delta flight for not wearing a bra. The gate attendant waited until the entire plane was seated, then asked to speak to me privately and escorted me off the plane, like a criminal.I was told “the official policy of @Delta is that women must cover up” pic.twitter.com/NuxiCrYf90

Debates on whether it's acceptable or not to wear shorts on planes have also emerged in recent years.
Some say they're ideal for traveling in hot weather, but others argue that wearing bottoms that reveal skin on dirty airplane seats is unhygienic.
Of course, there's no right or wrong answer to the latter question. It's entirely up to you if shorts are a comfortable choice.
But if we had to guess, Smith might just support the less is more approach to airport attire.
