- Warning: Spoiler ahead for "Lovecraft Country" on HBO.
- Episode five of "Lovecraft Country" premiered Sunday night on HBO.
- Lots went down in the episode (titled "Strange Case") including a major twist and a mysterious ending.
- And while some things came to light throughout the course of the episode, overall, "Strange Case" left us with more questions than answers.
Episode five of HBO's excellent drama "Lovecraft Country" aired on Sunday night. While the episode tied up a few loose ends, it mostly raised more questions than answers.
The episode, titled "Strange Case," mostly focuses on Leti's (Jurnee Smollett) sister Ruby (Wunmi Mosaku) as she experiments with transforming into a white woman, thanks to a potion supplied by William (Jordan Patrick Smith).
Also during the episode, Tic (Jonathan Majors) struggles to piece together the ancient language of the Sons of Adam, and solidifies his romantic relationship with Leti.
"Strange Case" ends with a bit of a cliffhanger, but that's not the only mysterious part of the episode. Here are seven burning questions we had after watching episode five of "Lovecraft Country."
Was Christina working with Hiram Epstein before his death?

Towards the end of the episode, it's revealed that William and Christina are actually the same person — Christina transforms into him with the help of the same potion she gives Ruby.
It's a pretty big revelation, and during the scene, it's not entirely explained how this came to pass.
But earlier in the episode, William makes a casual comment to Ruby about working with the disgraced scientist Hiram Epstein, who, it's implied, helped him concoct the magic potion that allows the user to change forms.
Christina's intense interest in Leti's home (revealed in previous episodes to have belonged to Epstein) suddenly makes a lot more sense, but William's origins (and Epstein's potential influence on Christina) still aren't totally explained.
How did William/Christina recover from being shot by the police captain?

Thanks to earlier episodes, we know that Christina has a spell of "invulnerability" on her, meaning that when Tic tried to shoot her, he was unable to.
We also know that the same spell was used by her father, Samuel Braithwhite, on himself before his death, and it was only removed because he was attempting to cast an even bigger spell.
But when Christina tells Ruby at a party that William was shot and nearly killed by the police captain over a dispute about the lodge's rightful heir, she doesn't mention the spell at all.
Christina explains that William was only able to survive because of her help. So does that mean that the spell of invulnerability on Christina only applies when she's in her "true" form, and not when she's transformed into William?
Also, how did William survive being shot "in the back" and his body being dumped in a river? Does this mean that Christina can only be harmed when she's transformed into her male alter ego?
This isn't really explained in the episode, but could have huge ramifications later on.
Did Tic's ancestor steal the Book of Names when she escaped from Titus' burning mansion?
Tic is related to Titus Braithwhite through his ancestor, Hanna.
HBO
Early in the show, Tic realizes that his ancestor Hanna who was enslaved by Titus Braithwhite — the patriarch of the Braithwhite family whom Samuel and Christina are descended from.
And in episode five, Tic has a nightmare in which Hanna runs out of Titus' burning mansion, holding a large book.
We know that the Sons of Adam's original Book of Names (which contained spells and other magical tips) has vanished and that both Christina and Tic are desperate to find it.
Could it be that Hanna took the book during her escape? It's not really explained in the episode, but plenty of Reddit users seem to agree with the theory.
What's the meaning of the rune that Tic, Leti, and Ruby encounter in the episode?
Runes feature prominently on "Lovecraft Country."
HBO
This rune has appeared numerous times throughout the series, but it becomes a major point of discussion in episode five.
Tic encounters the rune while trying to decipher the pages of the Book of Names that they swiped from Winthrop's vault. He suggests to Leti that the rune means "protection," but they're still not sure what it means.
And when Christina gives Ruby a stone to hide in the captain's office during the party, the same rune appears on top.
It'd be interesting if the rune does indeed mean "protection" because why would Christina be trying to protect the police chief, whom she says nearly murdered William in his quest to become the rightful heir of the lodge?
And if it doesn't symbolize protection, as Tic believes, then what does it really mean?
One thing that is clear is that this rune is important, and we'll likely see a lot more of it in future episodes.
Who's the severely injured man in the police captain's closet?
The identity of this man isn't explained in episode five of "Lovecraft Country."
HBO
While working at the party as a favor to William, Ruby inadvertently encounters a severely maimed man chained to a rod inside the police captain's closet.
He's bleeding, smells bad, and is unable to speak (Ruby later remarks that his tongue had been cut out). It's not immediately clear who he is, or what he did to end up in the captain's closet.
While with a few of his colleagues in his office, the captain mentions that the injured man "stole loot" and needs to reveal where it is, telling his friends that the man will "talk soon."
But other than that, nothing is really said about his identity or his relationship to the captain. It's also not clear whose loot he stole — or how he came to be caught.
Why does the captain have weird marks all over his chest?

HBO
His disfigured chest is only seen for a moment, but it's clear there's something wrong with his skin. It looks like it's covered in scales or strange burns.
Earlier in the episode, the scars on William's chest are shown for a moment as well.
But while William's scars appear to be a pair of snakes that look purposeful and almost elegant, the police captain's scars are far less appealing.
No one else in the room with him (aside from Ruby, hidden in the closet) seems to bat an eye at the captain's scars. Unfortunately for us, they're not really explained in this episode, either.
And who in Korea is Tic talking to on the phone?
Jonathan Majors as Tic on "Lovecraft Country."
HBO
At the end of the episode, Tic places an international call to Korea, and tells the woman on the other line that she was "right."
The camera then pans to Tic's notes in his lap, which show the word "die" under a series of runes — seemingly suggesting that a page from the Book of Names foretells Tic's death.
It's not clear exactly what Tic deciphered, or what the woman was right about. In fact, it's not even clear who this woman is.
In an earlier episode, Tic places a call to the same number, but hangs up when the woman answers.
And during his time in Ardham, he's forced to fight (and eventually subdue) an Asian woman conjured up by Samuel's magic, although it's not clear if she's the same woman he calls on the phone.
The episode doesn't really explain Tic's connection to this woman in Korea, or what she foresaw in Tic's future. Looks like we'll have to wait a few more episodes for an explanation.
