There are many great movies out in theaters during the holidays, including fun for the family, couples, and fans of action.

"Anyone But You" and "The Color Purple" are just some of the new releases playing this festive season.

Here are Business Insider's top picks if you plan to make a trip to the theater over the holidays.

If you are looking for a movie to take your children to, look no further than the new "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" prequel, "Wonka."

Director Paul King is known for his family favorites, having previously directed "Paddington" and "Paddington 2."

"Wonka" features irresistible musical numbers and a heartwarming story. Plus, Timothée Chalamet is great as a young Willy Wonka, who strives to be the greatest chocolatier in the world.

Honorable mention: The new Disney animated movie "Wish" is also in theaters.

You may have read the iconic book by Alice Walker, or watched the 1985 adaptation of "The Color Purple" starring Oprah Winfrey and Whoopi Goldberg. But have you seen the story told as a musical?

Business Insider's entertainment correspondent Kirsten Acuna writes that Taraji P. Henson (Shug Avery) and Danielle Brooks (Sofia) deserve Oscars for their performances.

"Warner Bros. has two musicals in theaters this holiday season," Acuna writes. "If you only have one musical outing in you, this is the one not to miss."

"Anyone But You" is a throwback to the romantic comedies of the 2000s, playing into the classic "enemies-to-lovers" trope.

In the movie, Ben (Glen Powell) and Bea (Sydney Sweeney) are forced to attend a destination wedding together, despite the fact they can't stand each other.

If you're looking for a couples movie, this is the one for you.

Based on a 2001 novel by Percival Everett, "American Fiction" is a biting satire about the publishing industry that is getting tons of award buzz.

Frustrated novelist Thelonious "Monk" Ellison (Jeffrey Wright) writes a stereotypical novel about the Black experience, which ends up becoming a huge hit.

"The Hunger Games" is back with a thrilling and thought-provoking prequel.

"The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes" follows a younger version of Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth), the villainous president in the original movies, as he experiences the brutality of the Hunger Games up close.

The prequel features top-notch performances from Blyth and costar Rachel Zegler.

Honorable mention: Concert tickets have been a hot commodity this year. If you missed out on seeing Beyoncé's Renaissance tour live, "Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé" is still available in theaters.
