There’s a special connection between Cersei from Game of Thrones and Komolika of Kasauti Zindagi Ki. It is the audience. As per a report released by Hotstar today, more than 41% of people who watched Game of Thrones, also watched the Hindi soap opera.

Hotstar is the streaming version of Star TV which pioneered the culture of soap operas in India. But its OTT version has an eclectic mix of options right from soap operas to top American television shows.

It may be fair to assume that a Game of Thrones is less likely to follow a soap like Kasauti Zindagi Ki. Then what explains the overlap put out by the India Watch Report 2019 from Hotstar?

It is the fact that people end up sharing subscriptions in India. Even after clocking over 500 downloads per minute this year, Hotstar hasn't overcome this challenge.

Indian men love drama but….

'Drama' was the most watched genre on Hotstar followed by romance, family, and reality — 45% of total entertainment consumption came from women. The other half were men.

As per the report, 40% of the Indian viewers of family dramas on Hotstar are men above 35 years. And they watched “Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai’ the most. Whereas, 45% of the women above the age of 35 years watched drama.

“Contrary to popular belief, men don’t dislike Hindi TV serials. Turns out, their interest for family and mythological shows is at par with women,” said the report.

But once again, the report is silent about the problem of shared subscriptions that may skew its inference above.
