3 women just made VMAs history for all landing solo directing nominations

• Three women have been nominated for best direction at the VMAs only once before in 2005, but two of them had male co-directors.

Female directors have already made history at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards, which will take place on August 30.

For the first time in the award show's 37-year history, three female solo directors have been nominated in the best direction category.

Billie Eilish scored a nomination for "Xanny," Taylor Swift was nominated for "The Man," and Hannah Lux Davis received a nomination for directing Doja Cat's "Say So."

Three women have been nominated for best direction before at the 2005 VMAs. However, only Floria Sigismondi, who directed the White Stripes' "Blue Orchid," was nominated on her own.

Diane Martel paired up with Francis Lawrence to direct Jennifer Lopez's "Get Right," and Missy Elliott worked with Dave Meyers to direct her video for "Lose Control."

Eilish and Swift have also made history with their nominations in other categories at the 2020 VMAs.

The "Ocean Eyes" singer is the first artist to score two nominations in the video of the year category while still being in their teens.

She received her first video of the year nomination for "Bad Guy" in 2019, but the award went to Swift's "You Need To Calm Down." This year, the 18-year-old's song "Everything I Wanted" is up for the award.

As for Swift, she's one of the few artists to land a video of the year nomination one year after winning the award. The 30-year-old's song "The Man" has been nominated in the show's top category this year.

Artists like Katy Perry, Beyonce, Eminem, and Britney Spears are among the artists that have received nominations for best video one year after winning.

The VMAs will be the first event to take place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York since the coronavirus pandemic began, though the venue will have "limited or no audience."

MTV announced that the show will feature performances from all five of the city's boroughs — Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island — "to honor the spirit and resilience of New York."

The outlet also reported that producers and Barclays staff are taking safety precautions into consideration while planning the show.

"Show producers alongside Barclays Center management have been working closely with state and local officials to implement best practices for everyone involved," MTV said in a statement.

"Among the measures all parties involved have aligned on include extensive social distancing procedures, meaningful capacity limitations and the virtualization of components where possible."

Two new categories, best music video from home and best quarantine performance, have also been added to the show in recognition of artists' work during the pandemic.
