In the 96-year history of the Academy Awards, only eight women have ever been nominated for best director, and only three have won.

This year, director Justine Triet was nominated for "Anatomy of a Fall," but many were angered that Greta Gerwig was not nominated for "Barbie," which got a best picture nod.
