Meta recently released its ‘Reels in Review’ report India for 2022. From 1 million reels on the ICC World Cup to the most used songs, Meta shared important highlights about how Indians used Reels. Here are the highlights from the report:

Reels are short, immersive videos that users can upload on Instagram and Facebook. It can be a curation of both images and video. It can be uploaded for maximum 90 seconds and minimum 15 seconds.

In 2022, 15 of the top 20 most-used songs on Instagram reels globally were from Indian artists. Some of the songs popular across Instagram and Facebook reels were KGF Theme song, ‘Srivalli’ from Pushpa and ‘Kesariya’ from Brahmastra, along with, ‘Baarish Main Tum’ by Neha Kakkar, ‘Gypsy’ by G.D. Kaur and ‘Jhoom’ by Ali Zafar.

There has been a rising interest in sports as a category, with the T20 World Cup and Qatar World Cup gaining traction in India, informed Meta. Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya were the top three most mentioned Indian cricketers on reels in India.

Meta India shared that over one million reels were made on the ICC T20 World Cup in India. Furthermore, there were more than 2 billion engagement (likes, comments and shares) on Instagram reels from India.

Films and series continued to dominate the pop culture as Instagram users were most interested in ‘Bhediya’, ‘Family Guy’, ‘Ek Villain Returns’, ‘Naagin 6’, ‘Vikram’, ‘Mismatched Season 2’ and the upcoming ‘Pathaan’ when creating and consuming reels.

Augmented reality (AR) enhances the effects of reels, making them more engaging. Some of the top AR effects used on Instagram reels were 𝕰𝖓𝖍𝖆𝖓𝖈𝖊, 𝙰𝚕𝟷 𝚜𝚘𝚏𝚝𝚎𝚗 and Smoke Flare VR.

There was an increased interest in Indian cricketer Suryakumar Yadav and musician Shubh. Regarded as one of best upcoming Indian batsmen, Yadav also plays for Mumbai Indians in IPL. Some of the Indo-Canadian singer Shubh’s most popular songs include ‘We Rollin’, ‘Baller’, and ‘No Love’.

With over 230 million users, India has the highest number of active Instagram users in the world, according to a Statistica report. The US is second on the list with nearly 160 million users.
