The final design for Tesla's Model 3 will be complete in just a few weeks, Tesla's CEO Elon Musk said during Vox Media's Code Conference on Wednesday.

"Almost all of the Model 3 design is done and we are aiming for pencils down basically in about six weeks," Musk said.

Musk originally unveiled the Model 3 at the end of March. However, many details about the car's features were not shared and the design, especially on the interior, was unfinished.

While the design will be complete in just a few weeks, the company will likely not show off the final product to the public until much later this year. Musk has previously said that he would reveal more about the car towards the end of the year.

The Model 3 is slated to go into production by the end of 2017, a deadline that some say is ambitious considering the company's past history of delays.

However, Musk said during the conference that the company is taking a completely different approach to designing the Model 3 that it did with designing the Model S or the Model X.

"We want to do the opposite of what we did with the X, which is make something that is a lot simpler, but still a car that people will love, and every design decision is factoring in the manufacturability," he said.

Musk has previously said the Model X was so delayed because the company included too many features in the car. But with the Model 3, Musk said the company would be more deliberate about what features they include and will hold off from adding functions that might delay the production timeline.

"If there are ideas for future cool things, we'll have it in Version 2, Version 3," Musk said.

"One thing I should say when I cite a schedule it is actually the schedule I think is true. It's not some fake schedule I think is true," Musk said. "It's never some knowingly fake deadline, ever."
