SC gives CBSE deadline till June 23 to decide on pending board exams for Class 10 and 12

• The Supreme Court today asked the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to come up with a decision on conducting the pending board examinations for classes 10th and 12th by Tuesday, June 23, 2020.
  
• The directive comes after several parents approached the apex court to consider scrapping the remaining exams in wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
  
• As many as 31 lakh students are set to sit for the examinations under the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) from July 1, 2020.
  
• Given the uncertainty around the COVID situation, the CBSE also cancelled class 10th and 12th exams across nearly 250 schools abroad.

The Supreme Court today asked the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to come up with a decision on conducting the pending board examinations for classes 10th and 12th by Tuesday, June 23, 2020.

The bench headed by Justice AM Khanwilkar raised the parents’ concern of sending their children to sit for exams — and asked CBSE to assess if the students could be allotted marks based on the internal assessment.

The directive comes after several parents approached the apex court to consider scrapping the remaining exams in wake of the coronavirus pandemic. According to the plea, the parents are seeking a direction on results to be declared based on the exams that have been conducted so far — and internal assessment of the remaining ones.

Given the uncertainty around the COVID situation, the CBSE also cancelled class 10th and 12th exams across nearly 250 schools abroad. Those students will be awarded marks based on the practical examinations or internal assessment, the petition alleged.

As many as 31 lakh students are set to sit for the examinations under the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) from July 1, 2020. Recently, the Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD) said that the board examinations for classes X and XII, that were postponed due to Coronavirus lockdown, will now be held from July 1 to July 15.

The government also directed CBSE to promote all the students — from class 1 to 11 — without examinations, except students of 10th grade.
