After days of massive student protest, the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) administration partially rolled back the hostel fee hikes.

R Subrahmanyam, secretary of the Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD) confirmed the same on Twitter.

According to the revised fee structure, the charges of a single room have been reduced to ₹200 per month against ₹600 proposed earlier and ₹100 for a shared double room against ₹300.

The old charges for single and double rooms were ₹20 and ₹10, respectively.

The move comes in the back of the ongoing protests by university students who were rallying against the fee hike, dress code and hostel curfews that the top university has now mandated.

However, the student union has called the move a ‘trap’ and they continue to protest.

The university administration had hiked the hostel mess security fee from ₹5,500 to ₹12,000, adding a service charge worth ₹1,700.

Added to this, hostel curfews and a dress code also did not resonate well with the students. The university mandated 11 pm as a curfew for hostel students.

"While we were paying ₹2,500 a month earlier, we will now have to pay ₹7,000. We are compelled to protest because our issues have not been addressed,” JNU students told NDTV.

The protest also coincided with the institute’s third convocation ceremony. The student body called for a boycott as they demanded a complete rollback.
