The students in 9th and 11th grade, who failed the final examination this academic year, will now be allowed to appear again in the school-based test.

This is as per the new guidelines rolled out by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

The students can take up either online or offline tests. “In view of the unprecedented circumstances of COVID-19, Union HRD Minister, Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ has advised all CBSE schools to provide an opportunity to all students, who have failed in 9th and 11th to take online/offline tests,” CBSE said in a tweet.

The schools can conduct online, offline or innovative tests to promote them to the next class. The test can be taken in all subjects that the student failed. “Opportunity will be extended to students irrespective of whether their examinations have been completed and their exam results have been released or their exams have not been completed. This facility is to be extended regardless of number of subjects and attempts,” the board official notification added.

However, CBSE clarified that this is a one time measure in extraordinary circumstances.

In April, the ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) directed the board to promote all the students from class 1 to 11 without examinations — except students of 10th grade who are appearing for boards this year.

Ramesh Pokhriyal, the HRD Minister told CBSE that these students shall be promoted to the next class based on school assessments — including projects, periodic tests, term exams — that have been conducted so far. This came after several teachers and parents appealed to the government for mass promotion without summative assessment.

This was done to benefit over a million students, who were agonizing over postponement of exams and suspension of classes. "In view of the current situation due to Coronavirus, I have advised CBSE to promote all students studying in classes I-VIII to the next grade," Pokhriyal said in an earlier tweet.
