Nearly 2% of Class X and class XII students appearing for the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) examination did not show up at their exam centres on March 2, amid fear and tensions in the violence-hit North East Delhi.

“There were 2888 candidates registered for class X and XII examinations in the North East part of Delhi. Out of which, 2,837 candidates are present with 51 absentees,” the CBSE release said.

The board added that it is willing to conduct fresh exams for those who were not able to appear.

Amid massive violence, the board had postponed the exams scheduled on February 26, 28 and 29. However, it clarified that no change was made to the exams scheduled from March 2 onwards. “Any further delay in conducting board exams in violence affected parts of North East Delhi may hamper chances of stude in securing admission to professional courses,” CBSE reiterated.

The exam was scheduled across 86 centres in North East Delhi — both government and private schools. The new dates for the postponed exams have not been informed yet.

The amendments in the exam schedule came in response to the Delhi High Court directions — that asked the board to chalk out an alternate long-term plan for examinations in these areas. The court said that the students need to know the schedule in advance, and not on a ‘piecemeal’ basis.

Safety of students can not be compromised in any case, it said.

Before this, there have been at least three such incidences where the schools were shut in Delhi. The schools will remain shut in the North East Delhi till March 7 as the situation is still tense.
