We all have lean phases in our career when we simply want to quit our jobs and do something else. While resignation may seem to be the easiest way to get out of the mundane routine, here's a little reality check that everybody should do before they put in their papers.

Analyse

This is the most important thing to do when you plan to quit your job. Reason out! Is it troubles with your boss or your colleagues? Or are you not happy with your profile? Carefully, evaluate your own performance too. Its easy to put the blame on others but like the law of physics- every action has an equal and opposite reaction.

No, we are not being devil’s advocate here but it is very important to introspect and understand where you are going wrong. Once figured out, you may just help build a more conducive work environment for yourself.

Evaluate

A lot of times, we tend to believe that landing a job is easy especially if we have been an above average performer. Sometimes when one works with an organisation and knows his work too well, he tends to overrate himself in the job market. But, its important to stop and think about your liabilities. Do you have a loan to pay off or any other personal responsibilities? It is important not to take a decision impulsively even when things are not going right in your office.

What's your POA?

It’s always best to chart out your future course of action in advance in order to avoid unwanted situations. Have a clear understanding as to what you want to do in the future. Do you wish to continue with a job or do you plan to start your own company. If you don’t know what is it that you want to do, we would advise you not to put in your papers because of monotony in life.

An alternate is a must

Well, it is good to be confident about yourself but over-confidence is a kill-joy. If you plan to work after you quit, its best to evaluate the job market thoroughly. In case, you have no clarity as to how you want to go ahead even after thinking about it a lot after quitting your job, its best to prepare a list of things you may want to pursue along with looking for a job. This way, you will always have a smart response to questions about your sabbatical during your job interviews.
