Fox News host Bill O'Reilly repeatedly and incredulously pressed Donald Trump during a Tuesday night interview on how the presidential candidate would fund his proposed wall along the US-Mexican border.

But the Republican real-estate mogul deflected O'Reilly's call for specifics and compared his "simple" proposal to the Great Wall of China.

"So simple. So simple," Trump said of how he would defend his wall plan in this week's debate. "You know the Great Wall of China, built a long time ago, is 13,000 miles. I mean, you're talking about big stuff. We're talking about peanuts, by comparison, to that. Mexico will pay for the wall. I will make sure it gets done properly."

O'Reilly was unconvinced, asking how he'd convince the Mexican government and President Enrique Peña Nieto to pay for the plan.

"But how!" the Fox host exclaimed. "What are you going to do to Nieto? What are you going to say to him? 'Hey, you have to pay for the wall to the tune of $2 billion.' He's going to say, 'Hey, forget it!'"

But Trump wouldn't budge, and the two attempted to talk over one another. Trump, who has based much of his campaign platform on a promise to halt illegal immigration, continued to insist that the Mexican government would simply fold under pressure.

"Bill. Bill. Bill. They're making a fortune. Mexico is making a fortune in the United States. It's becoming the new China in terms of trade. They're killing at us at the border. I have a lot of respect for Mexico. I have hundreds - actually, thousands - of Mexicans that have worked for me over the years," he said.

"I'm going to say, 'Mexico, guess what? This is not going to continue. You're going to pay for the wall,'" Trump added. "I've said that they're going to pay for the wall, and they will pay for the wall."

As an aside, a skeptical O'Reilly then returned to the Great Wall topic and asked Trump if he knew who the Chinese dynasties that built the wall were trying to keep out of their country.

"Lots of people that they didn't want," Trump said.

"No, no, no," O'Reilly replied. "The Mongol hordes. So that might come up tomorrow [at the debate.] And you credit me for giving you that answer if you use the Great Wall deal."
