The Associated Press reports that Superior Court Judge Robert Trentacosta's sentence was in line with what prosecutors had sought in a plea deal with Filner. Trentacosta specified that Filner could not seek or hold elected office while on probation.
Filner resigned in August amid widespread allegations of sexual harassment, during which nearly 20 women came forward with accusations. In October, he pleaded guilty to one felony and two misdemeanor counts that involved placing a woman in a headlock, kissing another woman, and grabbing the buttocks of a third woman.
Filner issued an apology in a statement to the court.
"I want to apologize to my family who has stood by me during this ordeal, to my loyal staff, and to the citizens," he said. "And most sincerely to the women I have hurt and offended. I look forward to making further contributions to the city that I love."
Filner was not sentenced to any time in prison, but he could face up to six months if he violates terms of his probation.
