Did you know that these popular Hindi movies that were actually copied from South Indian films?

Off lately, the trend of copying, or as they like to call it, officially remaking South Indian movies in Hindi has started picking up. This happens mainly because of the wider reach of Hindi as a language and because of the celebrity status of the actors of the Hindi film industry as compared to the actors from the southern parts of the country.

While everyone knows that movies like Wanted, Ready, Bodyguard, and Rowdy Rathore are scene-to-scene remade from respective South Indian movies, we list other blockbusters and popular ‘remakes’ that minted crores at the box office.

1. Son Of Sardaar (2012)
The so-called laughter riot, this movie starring Ajay Devgn and Sanjay Dutt was the Hindi remake of a 2010 Telugu movie, called Maryada Ramanna, which was directed by Baahubali fame S. S. Rajamouli and starred Sunil and Nagineedu.

2. Singham (2011)
The movie that brought Ajay Devgn back into action genre and became one of the highest grossing movies of 2011 was a remake of Singam, which starred Suriya and Anushka Shetty and came out in 2010. Both movies were co-produced by Reliance Entertainment. Singam was also remade in Kannada as Kempe Gowda, and in Bengali as Shotru.

3. Ghajini (2008)
The Aamir Khan starrer was the first Hindi film to earn Rs 100 crores at the box office, but the success can’t be attributed solely to the crew of the Hindi movie, because of the fact that it was a remake of a Tamil film of the same name, which came out in 2005. Interestingly, the female lead of both the films were portrayed by Asin Thottumkal and were also directed by the same person, A. R. Murugadoss. The Tamil film itself is inspired from Memento, an English film by Christopher Nolan.

4. Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007)
The psychological comedy horror movie is the official Hindi remake of Manichitrathazhu, a 1993 Malayalam movie starring Mohanlal. The 1993 original was also remade in Kannada as Apthamitra, in Tamil and Telugu as Chandramukhi, and in Bengali as Rajmohol.

5. Kyon Ki (2005)
The Priyadarshan movie that had Salman Khan playing a mental patient was a remake of a 1986 movie Thalavattam, which was also directed by Priyadarshan. The original movie starred Mohanlal and was also remade in Tamil in 1988 as Manasukkul Mathappu.

6. Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein (2001)
This movie has attained the status of a cult-classic because of the amazing performance by Madhavan. However, this was not the first time that he played this role. He also starred in Minnale, a 2001 Tamil movie that was later remade into RHTDM.

7. Nayak (2001)
This movie showed an ordinary citizen becoming a Chief Minister on the basis of his honesty and selflessness, but was not made keeping Anil Kapoor and Amrish Puri in mind. This movie was actually a remake of the 1999 Tamil movie called Mudhalvan, which starred Arjun and Raghuvaran in the respective roles. Both movies were directed by S. Shankar.
