For all the criticism of how some professional athletes handle their money, it is only natural for a person in their 20s to think about the toys they are going to buy when they sign their first big-time contract. That is also why the reaction by Detroit Lions corner back Darius Slay is so touching.

Slay agreed over the weekend to a 4-year extension worth $50.2 million, according to MLive.com, including $23.0 million guaranteed.

Slay told Kyle Meinke of MLive.com that he cried when he first saw the offer from the Lions because his first thought was of where he came from.

"Coming from where I'm from, it's hard, I had a rough life as a kid," Slay told MLive.com. "I tried to hold my tears in, but I couldn't too long, just because of where I came from. I shed a couple tears, man. I cried on (teammate Glover Quin's) shoulder for a second, because he sees me as a pup - as a young guy - and saw me coming up and doing this right now."

A $50 million contract is not bad for a second-round pick from the 2013 NFL Draft who has made slightly more than $4 million in his entire career up to this point.

Now that Slay has gotten the emotional part of his new contract out of the way, maybe he should start spending a little bit of the money. Slay told the media that he ran out of gas on the way to his first practice after signing the new contract.
