In run up to Uttar Pradesh polls in 2017, work on Delhi-Varanasi bullet train has been accelerated and it might just take two hours 40 minutes to cover a distance of 782 kilometres.
This is a part of PM Narendra Modi’s strategy to depict a pro-development image in UP as the holy city of Varanasi is also his constituency.
Meanwhile, the Delhi-Varanasi bullet train will pass through Aligarh, Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow and Sultanpur.
A Spanish firm is conducting feasibility study of the high-speed rail corridor and is expected to submit its final report in November.
Meanwhile, the project will be built at a tune of Rs 43,000 crore.
However, an official told TOI the final cost will be worked out only after detailed field study of the finally chosen alignment. The possibility of operating double-decker high speed trains on this section is also being explored by the consultant.
