A passenger train set a new speed record of running at 160 kilometres an hour (100 miles an hour) during a trial run between New Delhi and Agra. The train covered the distance of 200 kilometres between New Delhi and Agra in 90 minutes."This is now the fastest train in India. We are recording all technical parameters during the trial run and hope to introduce it to the public by this November," Delhi Divisional Railway Manager Anurag Sachan said.
While fast by Indian standards, the speed is way below the Japanese Shinkansen, which Modi admires, which touches 320 kilometres an hour.
The government is set to roll out extensive plans to overhaul the railways when it will present the railway budget. The introduction of high-speed rail links and bullet trains were one of the key poll promises of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
"The cost of upgrading tracks, signal systems and other related infrastructure isn't high on some of the corridors which already have other high speed trains," said Sachan.
