The Government of India on Wednesday, appointed Anil Chauhan as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS). He will also be working as Secretary to the Indian government and Department of Military Affairs.

Now he will be heading the process to build integrated war-fighting machinery.

He will be succeeding late CDS General Bipin Rawat, who died in a plane crash last year. With the sudden demise of the General, the position was vacant for almost 10 months.

CDS is the most high-ranked senior officer. The CDS is also a single point of contact for the government for giving military advice and is the senior-most bureaucrat in the defence ministry which has four major departments.

He had a career spanning 40 years, in which he had held several command, staff and instrumental appointments. He also has experience in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu & Kashmir and the North-East.

Chauhan will be the first retired officer to hold the position, after the Centre announced its new rules for selecting CDS.

He is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla and Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. In 1981, he was commissioned into 11 Gorkha Rifles, a regiment of the Indian Army.

Chauhan also held significant staff positions including Director General of Military Operations. He had also served on a United Nations mission to Angola.

In his entire career, he bagged several medals like Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, and Vishisht Seva Medal for his honorable and outstanding service in the Army.
