Inside the Mexican prison that was rocked by cartels
The fights and riots begun just before midnight. Witnesses said they heard gunshots, saw smoke coming from the prison, and saw inmates suffering from burns.
49 inmates were left dead, while 12 were severely injured. The riot went on for about an hour before it was controlled.
Many prisons in Mexico are overpopulated, which causes the prisons to be run by inmates rather than authorities.
The riot broke out when the leaders of the two cartels — Zetas cartel and the Gulf cartel — decided to take control over the whole prison.

Inmates attacked each other with knives, hammers, and other objects — such as glass bottles and chairs. 60 hammers, 86 knives, and 120 shivs were used for during the attack.

Topo Chico prison also holds a women's wing. However, the attacks didn't spread into that portion of the jail.
This is not the first deadly incident that has happened at Topo Chico prison that has involved the Zetas. In September of 2015, a Zetas leader was stabbed to death at the prison.
Also, in 2011, the head of security was found dead and mutilated with a note from the Zetas left on his body.

A list of names was given for the 49 people who were killed — neither of the leaders of the cartels were on this list.
The riot was said to be started as part of an attempt to escape, but none of the prisoners got out.
A major problem is the lack of security guards inside the prison.
Family members of the inmates flocked to the prison during the riot because they were worried about their relatives inside. The family members had no idea what was going on and didn't get any answers for hours.
Overpopulation at prisons has been a huge problem in Mexico for over a decade. Inmates are now being moved to other prisons to help the overpopulation of Topo Chico, including the two leaders who are blamed for starting the riot.
