Cyclone Vayu is fast heading to Gujarat— and it will delay monsoons further

- The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an alert in Gujarat as the Cyclone Vayu intensifies in Arabian Sea.
- The IMD issued orange alert as it doesn’t expect the cyclone to cause much damage. However, it has warned fishermen from venturing into the sea till June 13.
- The progress of monsoon may be hampered till June 15-16 as the cyclone will draw the moisture away.
Cyclone Vayu has intensified in the Arabian Sea coast and it is causing heavy rains, winds and thunderstorms, according to media reports.
IMD issued an orange alert as it doesn’t expect the cyclone to cause much damage. Yet, it warned fishermen from venturing into the sea till June 13.
Though the cyclone caused heavy rains across the Western Coast of India including Mumbai, Pune, Gujarat, Konkan and Goa, it might cause more damage to the already delayed monsoons in the area.
As the cyclone draws away the moisture, it hamper the progress of monsoon till June 15-16.

Moving to Gujarat
The cyclone is moving close to Gujarat at a speed ranging from 75 km per hour to a maximum of 135 km. It is likely to hit Gujarat on June 12 night, said IMD.
"The system currently is seen as a depression over the Southeast and East Central Arabian Sea and is centered at 11.2°N and 71°E, around 800 km South-Southwest of Mumbai," according to skymetweather.com.
As per MeT officials, the Cyclone Vayu will head to the Saurashtra by June 12. The western parts of Saurashtra and Kutch region in Gujarat are likely to witness ‘heavy to very heavy rains’ between June 12 and June 14.

Jamnagar, Somnath, Porbander, Dwarka and Nailiya in Kutch are likely to be impacted the most, and could even herald pre-monsoons rain across Gujarat.The cyclone might also bring light showers to cities, like Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat, Rajkot, Veraval and Bhuj on June 12 and June 13.
