As Budget session begins, CRPF deploys 4.5-tonne camouflage vehicle for parliament security

To avoid terrorist attack-like incidents, an armoured 360-degrees revolving Anti-Terrorist Vehicle has been deployed in the Parliament complex.

The vehicle has been brought out on special anti-ballistic configuration which was approved by the DRDO, and has been put on "trial" so that its efficacy in combating a terrorist or suicide attack can be tested.

The two-seater military camouflage vehicle weighs 4.5-tonne, and moves on tank-like tires; it also has a special armour plating, which can resist close firing from any modern assault rifle and grenades and provides ample opportunity to armed commandos to take precise aim from the firing ports without getting hit.

The officials confirmed that it has enough space for commandos to stock their weapons and ammunition.

As of now, the ATV has been handed over for trial to the elite security wing of CRPF, for securing the complex under its Parliament Duty Group charter. It will be seen rolling in and out during the budget session commencing today.

Due to its sheer small size, the vehicle is capable of rotating 360-degrees on a stationary mounted platform. It has been developed by a Jaipur-based firm on the directions of DRDO.

The officials also said that it can attain a maximum speed limit of 25 kmph and is the first of its kind in the small variants of bullet proof vehicles. These kinds of vehicles are required to operate in large built up areas like Parliament, they said.

The single ATV sports a flashy police beacon and to protect the driver, comes with an overall armour including bullet-proof glasses.
