Congressman: Shkreli claims to want to explain himself, now he'll get his chance
The hedge-fund manager turned pharma executive became a household name in September after his company, Turing Pharmaceuticals, raised the price of a critical antiparasitic drug by 5,000% .
The increase prompted public anger and drew regulatory scrutiny to the issue of drug pricing. Executives at large drugmakers, which also routinely enact large price increases for established products (though not as large as Turing did), were quick to distance themselves from Shkreli.
He responded to the subpoena on Twitter, seemingly mulling over the choice to attend the hearing held next Tuesday by the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. He later tweeted out a picture of his letter.
Shkreli was originally asked to testify before the House committee on the topic in December. That month, he was also was arrested on charges of securities fraud related to events earlier in his career.
