Citigroup is in talks to hire Armando Diaz, who most recently worked at the hedge fund Millennium Management, to run cash equity trading globally, according to people familiar with the matter.

The appointment would mark a return to Citigroup for Diaz, who worked at the bank until 2011.

He left the bank to join Millennium as senior managing director of global execution services. He left the hedge fund last year.

At Citigroup, he will report to Derek Bandeen, global head of equities, the people said.

Citigroup declined to comment.

Citigroup's previous global head of equity trading, Kevin Russell, left to join UBS O'Connor last year.

Millennium Management was set up in 1989 by Israel "Izzy" Englander, and it managed $34 billion in assets as of the start of this year.

Business Insider reported Wednesday that Citigroup had hired two senior members of the Goldman Sachs sales staff in London. Quentin Andre is joining as global head of structured sales in the equities business, and Dirk Keijer is joining as head of equity derivative sales for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
