After being headless for seven months, coal major Coal India Limited has appointed 1985 batch IAS officer Sutirtha Bhattacharya as its chairman-cum-managing director on January 5, 2015. The company made the announcement in a letter to the National Stock Exchange on Monday.“In pursuant to the letter No 21/26/2014-ASO dated December 18, 2014 issued by the Ministry of Coal… Sutirtha Bhattacharya assumed the charge of chairman-cum-managing director of Coal India Limited with effect from January 5, 2015,” said the company in the letter.
Prior to joining CIL, Bhattacharya was heading another state-run Singareni Collieries Co. Ltd. in Telengana. It should be noted that former CMD of CIL, S Narsing Rao, had put in his papers in order to play a greater role in the Telengana government.
Before the appointment, AK Dubey, joint secretary with the Coal ministry, was the acting head of the company.
