After Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's floor speech, Schumer was caught on a hot mic discussing Trump with some of his aides.
"He likes us," Schumer said. "He likes me, anyway."
Schumer added that he told Trump it is sometimes wise to veer away from the confines of the GOP platform.
"Here's what I told him: 'Mr. President, you are much better off sometimes stepping right and sometimes step left," he added. "You have to step just in one direction, you're boxed."
Schumer's remarks came the day after he and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi had dinner with Trump at the White House and came to an informal agreement on immigration and border security.
