Christie's fourth auctioning of art in India is starting tomorrow

Art connoisseurs across the world look forward to this auction. Now in its fourth edition, Christie’s India Sale in Mumbai tomorrow is the talk of the town. For amateurs, Christie’s are the only international auctioneers to hold sales regularly in India. In the December last year, their sale achieved the highest total for any auction ever to take place in India 74 lots sold above estimate, 23 lots sold above 1 Crore and 9 new artist records at auction were established. The sale offered for the first time a dedicated section for Classic Indian Art.

From classical to contemporary, Christie’s annual sale will be offering around 150 lots, including approximately 70 lots of Classical Indian Art, which Christie’s introduced to its auction offering for the first time in last year’s Mumbai auction. The fourth edition will be led by the outstanding private art collection of Abhishek and Radhika Poddar. Besides, the auction offers some further important art works by Syed Haider Raza, Akbar Padamsee, Bhupen Khakhar and Jehangir Sabalava, to name a few.

Poddar, who stays out of the limelight mostly, has earlier invested in a start up dealing in online auctioning of arts. He, being one of the best known art connoisseurs in India takes pride in his collection consisting of art works of Bhupen Khakhar, Manjit Bawa, Tyeb Mehta, Jogen Chowdhury and K.G. Subramanyan.

Since its first sale in India in December 2013, Christie's has sold over USD 42 million worth of art and antiques in the country. The latest auction will see lowest price on a art work at Rs 1-1.5 lakh, while the highest price is in the range of Rs 10-15 crore.
