Chelsea is getting a HUGE slice of the Premier League's revenues
Finance2 min read

Britain's football Premier League just revealed that Chelsea will receive £98.9 million ($152 million) out of the income generated from the sale of central broadcasting rights (UK and international) and other central commercial rights.

It is perhaps unsurprising considering it won the Premier League title this year.

When the Premier League announced its payments to clubs for the 2014/15 season, it added that Manchester City will receive £98.5 million ($151.3 million) and Arsenal will get £96.5 million ($148.2 million).

Revenue sharing chart.

The Premier League distributes the revenue in the following ways:

  • 50% of UK broadcast revenue split equally between the 20 clubs
  • 25% of UK broadcast revenue paid in Merit Payments ("Prize Money" per place in the table)
  • 25% of UK broadcast revenue paid in Facility Fees each time a club's matches are broadcast in the UK.
  • All international broadcast revenue, and central commercial revenue, is split equally among the 20 clubs.

So, a football team can get a larger slice of the £1.6 billion ($2.5 billion) total in league cash, if a team was shown on TV more. For example, Manchester United was the third largest earning football team with £96.8 million ($148 million), despite placing fourth in the Premier League, because they were live on TV more than Arsenal.
