Chelsea Clinton had a terse response to President Donald Trump's suggestion that Andrew Jackson would have avoided the Civil War."1 word answer: Slavery," Clinton tweeted from her official account.
Clinton, who has frequently confronted Trump on Twitter, suggested further that Jackson would not have stopped the war because he directly benefitted from slavery, which sparked it.
Jackson owned at least 150 slaves at the time of his death and died 16 years before the Civil War began, she wrote.
In an interview with SyriusXM, Trump told reporter Salena Zito that Andrew Jackson, who was President from 1829 to 1837, might have prevented the Civil War if he had only been in office just a little later.
"I mean, had Andrew Jackson been a little later, you wouldn't have had the Civil War," Trump said of the slave-owning president. "He was a very tough person, but he had a big heart. He was really angry that he saw what was happening with regard to the Civil War. He said there's no reason for this."
