Party Wise Candidates With Criminal Cases In The First Phase Elections

Before going to vote during the first phase of Lok Sabha elections on April 11, 2019, do you know a sizeable percentage of candidates contesting has a criminal background? Countrywide, 91 parliamentary constituencies are going for polling during the first phase. In total we find a list of 1266 candidates fighting for their luck from these 91 constituencies to gain an entry into the parliament as an MP to represent the largest democracy on the earth. Look at the following statistics to know how many of them are with a criminal background, an analysis of the statistics based on the seriousness of the crime, and a party-wise study of the percentage of candidates with a criminal background.
This study is based on the scrutiny of the affidavits filed by the contesting candidates when they file their nomination from the different constituencies. According to the existing regulations, the candidates are given a format to complete and they are expected to furnish several details including a self-declaration of the criminal cases against them. If a candidate fails to provide an information asked or if wrong information is given, the candidature might be rejected during scrutiny of the nomination by the EC. Hence these candidates have made a self-declaration of the criminal cases against them.
Candidates with Criminal Cases
213 candidates contesting during the first phase have made a declaration that they have criminal cases against them. This number works out to 17%.
Candidates with Serious Criminal Cases
About 146 out of 1266 candidates facing the elections have declared that they have serious criminal cases against themselves. This is 12% of the total number of contesting candidates.
Candidates with Declared Convicted Cases
12 among all the contesting candidates have declared convicted cases against them.
Candidates with cases related to Murder
About 10 candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves connected to murder punishable under IPC Section -302.
Candidates with cases connected to Attempt to Murder
25 candidates have declared cases connected to attempt to murder punishable under IPC Section 307.
Candidates with cases related to Kidnapping
4 candidates have declared that they have cases connected to kidnapping punishable under IPC Section-364A, kidnapping or abducting for the sake of murder coming under IPC Section-364, and Kidnapping, or forcing woman to compel her marriage, covered under IPC Section-366.
Candidates with cases related to Crime Against Women
16 candidates have declared that they have cases related to crime against women like rape coming under IPC Section-376, assaulting or criminally forcing unwilling women to outrage her modesty covered under IPC Section-354, and subjecting a woman to cruelty by her husband or relative punishable under IPC Section-498A.
Candidates with cases related to Hate Speech
12 among the total number of candidates have made self-declaration that they have cases connected to hate speech.
