The site is driving folks crazy for a few reasons. One is that out of nowhere it's become one of the biggest sites in the world. Also it's headline format drives some people bezerk. And compounding that, jealous media sites are increasingly trying to copy Upworthy's style. (There are also a bunch of Upworthy cloens already).
The site Newswhip is out with a new report today on the virality of various publishers (i.e., which ones get shared the most). Upworthy comes in at #3 behind Huffington Post and Buzzfeed.
But what makes Upworthy so amazing is how little content it produces each month. Huffington Post saw 18,000 stories get shared in November (according to Newswhip). Buzzfeed saw 3286. Upworthy? Just 225!
Derek Thompson at The Atlantic charted the number of Facebook shares per article by domain. You can see it's not even close. Upworthy has figured out the Facebook sharing thing to a level that's not even closed to being matched by anyone else.
