Gen Z is lost on what to wear to work, and TikTok creators have stepped in to provide office style inspiration

New graduates entering the working world have gotten used to virtual presentations and remote internships, so corporate TikTokers are telling them how to dress appropriately for the office.

Most of the class of 2023 entered college just before or during the pandemic, so they haven't had the chance to integrate their personal style into work-appropriate attire. Cue content creators sharing style tips on how to become a "corporate baddie" after getting used to taking Zoom calls in sweatpants.

TikTok's hashtag #officeoutfit has been viewed over 800 million times, and similar hashtags have had several hundred million views. Young employees are still figuring out what style choices are OK in an office, and which ones are best saved for weekends.

"The other day, a newish junior employee came in wearing a full-on crop top," a New York City-based senior-level professional wrote to Insider's "What's Working?" column.

The anecdote continued: "I was weirded out by it, and the people on my team were, too. I thought maybe HR would send an email about appropriate attire for the office — a more bland version of 'Don't dress like you're in the club.' But there's been nothing so far."

Although most would agree that crop tops aren't the best example of office attire, the anonymous submission stated that the office dress code became more relaxed in the wake of a pandemic. Now, most Gen Z professionals are going to their preferred search engine to avoid an uncomfortable email from HR.

In a February video titled, "get dressed with me for work," one creator received over 21 million views, and thousands of comments asking for more style inspiration.

"you just gave me a work outfit idea, thanks," one user commented.

"(Where) do you buy affordable but cute office wear," another asked.

While TikTok is the go-to platform for some early-career professionals, universities and companies are now offering guidance for those who aren't familiar with the best practices for working in person.

In 2022, Michigan State University began requiring business students to take soft skills classes to help them feel more confident when networking or entering a new office, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The program offers a step-by-step breakdown of how to conduct yourself in an office after instructors noticed students were more awkward than they used to be.
