Some cities offer much better opportunities than others for people attempting to start a career, a study has found.

Bankrate, a financial services company, put together a list of the best and worst cities for professionals who are just starting out. Austin, Texas, took the top spot.

The report analyzed metropolitan areas across the US on categories including GDP per capita, year-on-year job growth, cost of living, and percentage of remote workers.

Alex Gailey, an analyst at Bankrate, said: "More than ever, young workers crave work-life balance, the flexibility to work remotely, and higher pay – and these cities offer what young professionals are looking for."

Austin ranked highly for five-year population change of 25-34-year-olds, year-over-year job growth, and percentage of remote workers. The city is known as "Silicon Hills" and serves as a base for major companies such as Elon Musk's Tesla. Musk moved Tesla's headquarters to Texas from California at the end of 2021.

Some of the worst cities to launch a career were Birmingham, Memphis, and New Orleans, the study found.
