This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with a sales assistant in the New York City metropolitan area. Insider has verified their employment, as well as the job offer, but isn't naming them in order to protect their career prospects. This essay has been edited for length and clarity.
I was working in fashion wholesale as a sales assistant, and I applied for a very similar job, just selling home goods instead of apparel.
I went through a recruiter and got two interviews, first with an account executive and then with the company president. Soon after the second interview, I received a job offer via email. I was really excited, especially since the compensation was more than a 50% pay increase from what I was making. I instantly accepted and the next day I gave notice to my employer. My start date was supposed to be two weeks from the day they offered me the position.
Exactly a week after I received it, I got an email saying they were rescinding the job offer because internal changes within the company meant they had to remove the open position. They said they'd keep my resume on file if anything changed.
I was really upset. I was like, are you kidding me? I just gave notice to my employer.
I was feeling all types of disappointment, a lot of anger. I was really sad as well, but it was mostly anger. I really can't even describe how I was feeling just because it was just so intense.
I immediately called my boss and told her what happened, and I was practically begging to keep my job. So my boss said she'd talk with HR and see what she could do.
She called me the next day and said unfortunately there was nothing she could do. I was really upset knowing that I wouldn't be able to get my job back. Just because of this new company, I was going to be unemployed really soon.
I went on Glassdoor and wrote a negative review about the experience I had with the new company. Later, they emailed me telling me to please take it down. I completely ignored their email, and I blocked them, hoping that they wouldn't send me another one again. I was just so flabbergasted that they would tell me to take down a negative review when it wasn't even my fault that they rescinded my job offer.
I posted my review and left it up because I want to look out for other people who are probably actively interviewing for this company, and just save even one person from potentially losing their job like me and being left in a horrible situation like I am. I want people to know what kind of company this is, and how extremely unethical and unprofessional they are.
I reached out to several employment lawyers. A handful of them told me I had no case even with evidence provided. A few of them said they just flat out don't handle these types of cases, that generally these types of cases are very difficult to win and that I shouldn't get my hopes up.
Right now, I'm still applying to jobs as soon as I can because I personally cannot be without work for a very long time.
They said they'd keep my resume on file, but I'd never work there now. After this horrible experience, I can't even begin to imagine what kind of company they are. I don't even want to imagine how they treat their current employees if they are doing this to a potential employee. Even if they offered me a million dollars to work for them, I still wouldn't.
