Tesla has begun the production on its Model Y electric all-wheel-drive crossover SUV months ahead of its previous announcement, and the company expects to deliver the first Model Y units by March 2020, according to Tesla in its Q4 FY2019 report.
The production of Tesla's Model Y was previously said to begin in the summer of 2020, the company said in October 2019, which was already an advance of previous Tesla announcements that said production would begin toward the end of 2020.
The Model Y is in production at Tesla's Fremont, California, facility. The company plans to expand the Model Y's production to Shanghai in 2021, and eventually in Berlin.
It was also announced that the Model Y's range would be increased from a previously estimated 280 miles on a single charge to 350 miles.
Ranging in between $40-$60,000, the Model Y is an important model for Tesla. It's the company's first crossover SUV - a segment that's incredibly popular in the US at the moment. At the Model Y's launch event last spring, CEO Elon Musk said the Model Y could outsell every other vehicle Tesla currently makes.
