Popular watch brand Fossil’s latest product claims to be an eco-friendly one. The company has launched a solar-powered watch with straps made out of plastic waste of 16 bottles. And interestingly, once fully charged the watch can run for four months.

“The outer ring of the watch case acts as a solar panel, capturing light and converting it to energy using a solar cell beneath the dial. It then stores the energy in a rechargeable battery that powers the movement of the watch,” said the company.

Even the colourful straps of the watch have been created from yarn spun from 16 plastic bottles, while the packaging box for the watch is also a bio-based plastic case made from environmentally-friendly castor oil.

Priced at ₹9,995, the watches are currently a limited edition collection with only 1754 pieces.

Fossil had earlier taken up the goal to design and produce 100% of its products to meet its pro-planet criteria by 2025. This also meant that the company wants to turn 100% of its main packaging recyclable and reusable by 2025.

But Fossil is not alone in the solar watch race. Earlier, CASIO’s G-SHOCK, Seiko, Citizen EcoDrive too have solar powered watches collections.
