Amazon is cancelling orders that don’t fall under ‘essential services’ and were placed before coronavirus lockdown

Amazon India is now cancelling orders that don’t fall under ‘essential services’ category. Many had placed orders before the lockdown was set in place, and while those orders first said delayed, Amazon has now started sending out cancellation messages for those orders. According to reports, Amazon’s over 60 fulfillment centers were shut across India owing to the lockdown.
However, a lot of the orders continue to say ‘delayed’ due to the nationwide lockdown and government restrictions on goods. Amazon has also added the option of cancellation in the message for delay.
Currently, Amazon is only taking orders for essential products through pre-paid payment methods. It says it is working towards resuming deliveries soon.
Amazon refused to comment on Business Insider’s queries about the cancellation of orders.

On the first day of lockdown, delivery agents across the country were hassled by the police. Some were even arrested. Disturbing visuals also showed how a Medlife delivery agent who was out to deliver medicines was lathicharged by the police in the national capital.
Because of the issues across the country, Flipkart, Milkbasket, Bigbasket, Grofers had all temporarily suspended services.
They have now resumed services for delivery of essential items. The Ministry of Home Affairs in a statement had clarified that e-commerce falls under essential services and had directed state governments and police departments to ensure the smooth passage of delivery riders.
