Trump is expected to travel in the presidential state car and his motorcade is expected to include around 50 cars. In this post, we will see what makes the ‘Beast’ one of the safest cars on earth.
Everything you need to know about the ‘Beast’
- Prior to the assassination of John F Kennedy, US presidents would often stand, and ride uncovered in their state cars. Kennedy’s assassination led to introduction of bullet-proof, armored and sealed cars.
- The presidential state car is maintained by the United States Secret Service and is transported in the hold of the Air Force One when the President travels.
- Underneath the Cadillac body, the Beast is actually a giant Chevrolet SUV platform.
- The car is equipped with pump-action shotguns and tear gas cannons.
- The car can also lay down oil slick to prevent other cars from chasing it.
Starting with the chassis, it has reinforced steel that protects the car against bombs and mines. Under the grille, the car features a hidden night vision camera. The car’s fuel tank is armour plated and filled with a special foam that prevents it from exploding.
The tyres are Kevlar-reinforced with steel rims underneath, making them shred and puncture resistant. The steel rims allow the car to run even when the tyres are destroyed.
The doors of the car are 8-inch thick and armored-plated. When they are closed, they form a 100% seal to protect the President from chemical attacks. The doors can also be electrified to prevent intruders. The car windows are made of five layers of glass and polycarbonate. They can even withstand armor-piercing bullets. Additionally, only the driver’s window can be opened partially.
The interior
Inside the car, the President sits in the rear compartment with up to four other passengers. The car has a panic button for emergencies and its own oxygen supply. The boot includes a firefighting system, tear gas and smokescreen cannons.
The car also has a satellite phone with a direct line to the Vice President and the Pentagon, allowing the President to stay connected and issue orders in case of an emergency.
