Flying cars may become a reality soon as AirCar, a dual-mode car-aircraft, has received official approval and Certificate of Airworthiness by the Slovak Transport Authority.

The AirCar has been developed by Klein Vision, a Slovakian company. It has been under development since 2017 and is finally a step closer to mass production, making our dreams of flying cars closer to reality.

“AirCar certification opens the door for mass production of very efficient flying cars. It is official and the final confirmation of our ability to change mid-distance travel forever,” said Professor Stefan Klein, the inventor and founder of Klein Vision.

The car is said to have undergone 70 hours of rigorous flight testing based on the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Standards and has completed over 200 takeoffs and landings while flying cross-country. The flight tests done by the AirCar included the full range of flight and performance maneuvers.

The company has plans to fly the car from London to Paris in the near future.

"The Certificate of Airworthiness is an official certificate issued in compliance with all EASA regulations for its member states," the company's co-founder, Anton Zajac, said in a statement to New Atlas.

"Each member state appoints local authority to issue certificates valid across the member countries. Hence, Aircar could fly into the UK and we do have plans to fly to London from Paris in near future,” Zajac added.

“Transportation Authority carefully monitored all stages of unique AirCar development from its start in 2017. Transportation safety is our highest priority. AirCar combines top innovations with safety measures in line with EASA standards. It defines a new category of a sports car and a reliable aircraft,” said Rene Molnar, director, Civil Aviation, Transport Authority of Slovakia.

The car can be driven on the road and also flown. It can be converted from a car to an aircraft in three minutes just with the press of a button. It is powered by a 140PS BMW 1.6-litre engine and can go up to 1,000 km on a single charge.

In addition to this, Klein Vision is working on a lightweight and efficient ADEPT engine that is expected to deliver 300 kmph speeds and a range of 1,000 km.

So far, the two-seater AirCar that weighs 1,100 kg has flown at 8,200 ft and reached a maximum speed of 190 kmph.
