Auto sales data April 2022: Tata Motors vrooms, Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai sales hit a bump

The gap between Tata Motors and market leader Maruti Suzuki is shrinking each month – Tata Motors has registered a surge of 74% in its sales in the month of April 2022, while Maruti Suzuki reported a nearly 6% decline in the same period.The rise of Tata Motors has been spectacular, and the numbers reflect this – its car sales grew from 35,300 units in December 2021, to 72,500 units in April 2022. This includes around 30,900 commercial vehicles and 41,600 passenger vehicles.
On a year-on-year basis, Tata Motors registered a growth of 74% when compared to April 2021, with its sales surging from 41,700 units.
Tata Motors had announced a price hike of its passenger vehicles in April 2022 by around 1.1%, claiming that the increase in prices is due to rising input costs.
Mahindra & Mahindra, Toyota and Kia were the other notable gainers.

Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Honda, MG Motor witness declines
On the other hand, Maruti Suzuki reported a decline of nearly 6% on a year-on-year basis. The company sold 1.5 lakh units in April 2022 compared to 1.59 lakh in April 2021.
“The shortage of electronic components had a minor impact on the production of vehicles during the month,” Maruti Suzuki said in a regulatory filing.
Maruti Suzuki’s mini cars have been impacted the most, with the sales of Alto and S-Presso declining by nearly 32% from 25,041 in April 2021 to 17,137 in April 2022.
"I think that there is no doubt that because of regulatory changes, taxes by state governments, increase in prices of commodities, the prices on the lower end of the market have increased,” Maruti Suzuki’s chairman RC Bhargava said during an earnings call.

South Korean auto giant Hyundai also reported a decline, alongside Honda. While Hyundai’s sales declined 5% on an overall basis and 10% domestically, Honda’s numbers were worse, with a fall of 13%.MG Motor reported a 22% decline, making it the worst-performing company in the April month.
