Investors of auto companies finally have some reason to cheer – India’s leading car maker Maruti Suzuki, along with the likes of Toyota and Mahindra & Mahindra has posted a healthy set of numbers, while Tata Motors witnessed a marginal decline sequentially. Together, these automakers accounted for nearly two-thirds of India’s four-wheeler sales in July.

After battling rising commodity prices and fuel price shocks, most of the car makers posted healthy growth in sales in July, with the exception of Kia and MG Motor, which declined 8% and 11% respectively, as compared to June.

Maruti Suzuki posts a resurgent month

Maruti’s numbers are even more impressive considering the fact that nearly one in every two cars sold in July was a Maruti. The compact segment was the most popular, accounting for nearly half of all Maruti sales. This segment includes cars like the Baleno, WagonR, Swift, Dzire and others.

Other popular Maruti cars during the month include the Alto and S-Presso in the mini segment, while the Brezza, Ertgia, S-Cross and XL6 remained sought after.

Toyota posts its strongest month ever

Japanese auto giant Toyota posted its strongest month ever, with a 50% increase in sales as compared to July 2021.

Innova Crysta, Fortuner and Glanza were its most popular cars during the month. The upcoming HyRyder could help the carmaker post even better numbers in the coming months.

Tata EV sales cross 4,000

The launch of the long-range Nexon EV – named Nexon EV Max – along with the fact that EVs are gaining momentum helped Tata Motors cross the 4,000 mark in the segment.

Overall, though, Tata’s July sales are marginally down by 1%, primarily due to a fall in its commercial vehicle sales.

Bajaj and TVS report modest sequential gains

Two-wheeler makers Bajaj and TVS reported modest sequential gains, but Bajaj suffered a year-on-year decline due to a fall in exports.

For Bajaj, Pulsar continued to be its sales driver, followed by the affordable CT100, Platina, among others.
